Joint Seminar - Dr. Ignacio Javier Cardone and Maísa Edwards (KCL PhD Candidate) present on their research for the University of São Paulo (NUPRI/IRI/CAENI).

Cardone: Images and representations of Antarctica within the military forces of Brazil are analysed through a socio-historical interpretation of the involvement of the different Brazilian military branches on the political definition and the actions implemented on the sixth continent. Therefore, the research offer some insights on how such participation have resulted on representations about the role of Antarctica for Brazil.

Edwards: This presentation will provide an understanding of the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic (ZOPACAS) as a Zone of Peace and demonstrate how the ZOPACAS has served as a mechanism through which Brazil has strengthened its diplomatic and defence relations with its fellow Member States, both in South America and West Africa.
